Sukhjot (Joti) Basi has been a technologist, consultant and an entrepreneur in Seattle area since 1996. His experience and areas of interest cover a wide range of disciplines such as wireless technologies, enterprise software development, search engine marketing and social networking. His consulting and employment experiences include working with software giants such as Microsoft, major wireless carriers such AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and online marketing companies such as The Cobalt Group and Marchex. He has extensive experience in working with outsourced teams and remote offices around the world, including the teams in China, India and Europe. He is also passionate about the stock market and other investment instruments. He has also been involved with startups and was one of the founding volunteers of TiE-Seattle.
Joti has an MBA in Technology Management (TMMBA) from University of Washington, Seattle where he spent grueling 18 months learning about competitive strategies and high-tech marketing, and the ropes of venture capital. He pursued his undergraduate studies in Electrical Engineering from Seattle University and Bellevue Community College.
Joti migrated from then almost socialist India in 1991 with $20 and a suitcase to pursue his dreams. Unlike most of the Indian technologist in the USA today, Joti worked his way up from minimum wage jobs such as flipping burgers, cleaning toilets, selling slurpees at a 7-11 (thus was called Appu from Simpsons in his Physics class), and a warehouse laborer. He comes from a long line of engineers and entrepreneurs starting with his great-grandfather, who studied Civil Engineering at what is known as IIT Rourkee India and later started first steel based construction material company in Burma and a civil engineering firm to help the British Government build roads and bridges in Burma then part of the British empire, in the early 20th century. He enjoys fun things such as biking, hiking, travel, tennis, skiing, swimming and Hollywood/Bollywood movies.
