Technology Industry Is Maturing? - Mark Cuban is Wrong

17 May in Technology

So, I am nothing compared to Mark Cuban.  I don't have billions of dollars (not even millions), a protfolio of successful businesses and investments, a bid on Yahoo's board or a professional sports team.  Last year, I read his post that Internet Is Dead and Boring and I couldn't believe that a guy who made his billions from internet is saying that.  Recently, I learned that he is on Carl Icahn's slate for Yahoo's board, the same Yahoo to whom Mr. Cuban sold his company.  But what is rather interesting is that on Feb 10th, he added  another post to his blog defending his "Internet is Dead and Boring comment".  While defending this comment he made an additional comment "Further arguments can be made that the MSFT YHOO potential merger is further evidence that the technology industry is maturing."
No disrespect, but I guess the technology industry for Mark Cuban may have matured on the day he sold his startup to Yahoo.
If the technology industry has matured then  "Why is he even interested in joining the board of a technology company?".   Shouldn't we all be involved in the activities which have some future?
As far as productivity is concerned, it has increased due to the emergence of internet.  A good example is call centers in countries such as India.  An average american resource has been releived from the task of working as a call center employee and move up the career ladder by getting some kind of hands on technical profession.  At the same time, an average unemployed college graduate in India is no longer unemployed.  Instead he/she is not only adding to his own country's GDP (Gross Domestic Product) but also to USA's GDP.   Social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace can be considered as couter-productive but they are also enabling lot of folks to find jobs, form business connections and communicate at a much faster speed.  So where exactly is the productivity loss?
While, I won't disagree with the fact that Internet has reached a level of stability but neither Internet nor Technology has reached maturity or its full potential.  New technologies are always evolving.  In the past, most of the evolution of new technologies was limited only to a handful developed countries such as US, UK and Japan because other countries didn't have resources.  But with globalization, that is all changing.  Global citizens should expect a lot more innovations coming out of countries such as India and China as they slowly shift from service model to R&D model.  Sure the argument is made that since most of the engineers have only service industry experience they cannot get involved in R&D and come up with new technologies.  But lets not forget, most of the technological innovations start in a basement or a garage and no one can stop any of these service industry engineers to do that.
New technologies have been comI would encourage Mr. Cuban to visit his own comments about 10 years from now :)
